Like John Tory's faith based school funding debacle, Dion's Carbon-Shift will destroy the Liberals. Already it's driving people to the Conservatives. In my riding, many people I've talked to who claim they usually vote Liberal are looking to move their votes to the Conservatives this time because they have had enough with higher costs.
In an economy where energy prices (particularly gas) have risen so much in the last year, people are saying enough is enough. They aren't dumb enough to believe Dion's malarky that the Carbon-Shift won't result in higher gas prices. They also realize it won't reduce our emissions (does any government program really succeed in the ways its supposed to?).
And last, they simply can't imagine a Canada with Stephane Dion as Prime Minister.
Whether this will translate into a Conservative win in Newmarket-Aurora is an entirely different matter. I hope it will.

It should translate into a win, but you can never count out those braindead die-hards who support the Liberal brand name for, well, really no good reason at all. You know the types... those who vote Liberal in the same way that one might cheer for the Leafs. Hey, it's their 'team'. Go Team! Just try and ask these people why they vote Liberal--it's really quite funny and scary, all at the same time. Sometimes they'll tell you they vote Liberal because their daddy voted Liberal. Sometimes they just say they vote that way because they always have. Hell, sometimes the only answer you get is a blank stare and the sound of crickets chirping! Give it a try sometime.
You're right that the Green Shift is an issue of faith. In the absence of consistency and hard facts, you would have to accept the whole policy blindly and hope for the best.
I'm not sure if that's the best course of action in today's economy.
As is kyoto. Despite the zillions of "scientists?" who claim it's the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE of our times! The faith required to believe that ANYTHING will change if we tank our economies is remarkable. Nothing will change , least of all emission levels so what are we being ordered to believe in? The very thought that we can effect ANY reversal in what is happening is astronomically arrogant and grossly naive.
“Bait ‘n Shift” - Mr. Dion has modified an old salesman’s trick to dupe Canadians into giving him their votes. He “baits” voters with the promise of income tax cuts and then, after the election, “shifts” to a carbon tax focus. Of course, the income tax cuts pale in comparison to the financial burden imposed by the carbon tax.
Anywhere but in politics, this would be illegal. The Competition Bureau Canada describes the illegal sales practice as “the retailer successfully captures your shopping dollars by luring you into the store with an advertised bargain that was never intended to be made available in reasonable quantities”.
Sound familiar? All Mr. Dion talks about are income tax cuts. He doesn’t mention that the income tax cuts are for a few; the carbon tax is for everyone.
