Big Brother Strikes Again!

I had quite the chuckle last night. Rogers Television was interviewing several York Region Police Officers on the subject of driving. The main theme of the news segment was to reinforce the idea that drivers get distracted easily and accidents happen fast. You know, the same old line about "its better to arrive late, than not at all" kind of stuff.

So, they don't want people eating, talking on cellphones, or looking at Buttonville Airport as they pass by on the 404 heading north.

I don't know who envisioned the piece, but the officers were politely telling the public that they are too stupid to talk and drive at the same time, and drivers should focus on driving only.

The part that made me chuckle, though, was that the officer was being interviewed on camera while driving! He was telling us how important it was to stay focused, and that driving was a full time job, and that you can't be distracted, not even for a second. But he was being interviewed as he drove!

Furthermore, the officer had a cell phone, a dispatch radio and a laptop in his cruiser.

I don't mind being reminded to stay safe, but the last thing I need is someone lecturing me on what I can and can't do, especially when that person doesn't follow their own advice.

I guess this was just too obvious for the police officer to figure out. I hope he wasn't a detective.
